Reid and Nygren (1988) designed a survey instrument to measure time load, mental effort load, and psychological stress load in workplace settings. They named their instrument the Subjective Workload Assessment Technique (SWAT). We adapted questions from this instrument to be appropriate for students in educational settings with the rationale. 

Our survey was designed for each student participant to answer the set of load questions for each course they were enrolled in for the Spring 2021 semester. All questions were five-point Likert scale options, with the exception of the first time load question which represents an objective assessment of the hours students spent per week on the rated course.
